Tips for Kids Learning to Read Chinese Books are useful for those of you whose kids are beginning Chinese learners ready to start reading Chinese books. Tips include general criteria of selecting appropriate books, incentives and rewards, as well as using Chinese reading logs to track reading.
What Books Are Good for Kids Learning to Read Chinese Books
Start with Simple Books
Choose books with just a few words on each page. This helps kids feel successful and builds confidence.
Use Picture Books
Look for books with lots of pictures. Pictures help kids understand the words and make reading more fun!
Try Books with Pinyin
Pinyin is a way to show how to say Chinese words using the English alphabet. Books with pinyin can help kids learn how to say the words as they read.
Introduce Leveled Reading
Leveled reading means choosing books that match your child’s reading level. Start with easy books and gradually move to harder ones as they get better at reading.
Repeat High-Frequency Words
Books that repeat common words help kids remember them better. Look for books that use the same words over and over again.

Incentives and Rewards for Kids Learning to Read Chinese Books
Reward Chart
Create a reading reward chart where kids can earn stickers or small rewards for each book they read. This motivates them to keep reading and reaching their goals. At the end of certain period of time (say, one month) or after a collection of a number of stickers (say 10), give the child a reward. It can be a popcorn movie night, a trip to the zoo, or a meal at a Chinese restaurant – you name it. You can use a general reward chart or a specific reading reward chart as shown below.
Punch Card
Punch card is also an effective way to motivate kids to do a certain task, for example, reading. It normally specifies what reward the child is going to receive upon completing all the tasks. Every time when the child reads, you can either punch the number or put a sticker over the number. Once all the numbers are punched or covered, the child can receive the agreed reward.
Tracking Kids’ Reading with Chinese Reading Logs
Reading logs help kids track their reading progress. For older children, they can write down the titles of the books they’ve read, how many pages they’ve read, or how long they’ve spent reading each day. For younger children, parents or guardians can fill it out while talking to the kids during the process. This helps them see how much they’ve accomplished and sets a routine for reading.
