You’re doing great! We’ve covered Numbers and Colors, and today we’re learning about something very important: Family Members (家人 – jiārén)! Knowing how to talk about family is essential in any language.

Let’s learn the Mandarin Chinese words for common family members!

Today’s 10 Thematic Words: Family Members

Family is central to Chinese culture. Many of these words are repeated (like 爸爸 bàba, 妈妈 māma), which makes them sound affectionate and is common for close relationships. Listen carefully to the pronunciation in today’s video!

爸爸 (bàba) – Dad, Father
妈妈 (māma) – Mom, Mother
爷爷 (yéye) – Grandfather (paternal – father’s father)
奶奶 (nǎinai) – Grandmother (paternal – father’s mother)
哥哥 (gēge) – Older Brother
姐姐 (jiějie) – Older Sister
弟弟 (dìdi) – Younger Brother
妹妹 (mèimei) – Younger Sister
儿子 (érzi) – Son
女儿 (nǚ’ér) – Daughter

Note: There are different words for maternal grandparents – 外公 wàigōng and 外婆 wàipó – but we’re starting with the paternal side today!
