Tiger, Lion, and Panda… How to Say Zoo Animals in Chinese

After last week’s “Insects Chinese Vocabulary” post, I’ve received many requests for more of this kind of lessons. So here you are, let’s learn how to say zoo animals in Chinese!

Zoo is always a fascinating place for kids to visit, again and again. There are many animals living in the zoo and that makes it a great learning opportunity for children: not only the animals themselves, but also maybe some Chinese. Isn’t it great if the kids can name the animals they see in Chinese while they are in the zoo?

So have a look at some of the zoo animals kids would be interested.

Zoo Animals Vocabulary in Chinese

Zoo is called 动物园(dòng wù yuán) in Chinese.

Here is a list of animals children love to see in the zoo:

老虎 lǎo hǔ tiger
狮子 shī zi lion
大象 dà xiàng elephant
长颈鹿 piáo chóng giraffe
斑马 bān mǎ zebra
猴子 hóu zi monkey
大猩猩 dà xīngxīng gorilla
袋鼠 dàishǔ kangaloo
狐狸 hú lí fox
狼 láng wolf
熊猫 xióng māo giant panda
熊 xióng bear
豹子 bào zi cheetah
骆驼 luò tuó camel
北极熊 běijí xióng polar bear
犀牛 xī niú rhino
河马 hé mǎ hippopotamus
梅花鹿 méi huā lù deer
野猪 yě zhū boar
鳄鱼 èyú crocodile
火烈鸟 huǒ liè niǎo flamingo
老鹰 lǎo yīng eagle
猫头鹰 māo tóu yīng owl
鹦鹉 yīng wǔ parrot
孔雀 kǒng què peacock
蛇 shé snake
企鹅 qǐ é penguin
海狮 hǎi shī sea lion
乌龟 wū guī turtle

Sentence Examples

Let’s make some sentences with these zoo animals vocabulary.

我们全家经常去动物园。
Wǒmen quánjiā jīngcháng qù dòngwùyuán.
Our family often go to the zoo.

我最喜欢的动物是大熊猫。
Wǒ zuì xǐhuān de dòngwù shì dà xióngmāo.
My favourite animal is giant panda.

动物园里有很多动物：狮子，老虎，大象… 看，那里有一只猴子。
Dòngwùyuán li yǒu hěnduō dòngwù: Shīzi, lǎohǔ, dà xiàng… Kàn, nà li yǒuyī zhǐ hóuzi.
There are many animals in the zoo: lions, tigers, elephants… Look, there is a monkey over there.
