I was asked the other day if there is Halloween in China. The answer is yes and no. There are actually several festivals for ghosts in China. There are three ghost days in China: Qingming Festival 清明, Zhongyuan 中元, and Hanyi 寒衣. Among these three festivals, Zhongyuan (中元节), which was Aug 22 this year, probably is the closest to Halloween. Actually, the whole month of July (Chinese lunar calendar) is Ghost Month. On the night of the Zhongyuan festival with the full moon, people believe the bridge between the dead and the living is established, and people must take precautions and honor the dead.
