The word 会 basically can be used in two ways: 1. to express an ability (a skill or knowledge) that has been learned; 2. to express the possibility of an action which happens in the future. Here is the Chinese vocabulary study guide 会.

EXPRESS AN ABILITY WITH

The sentence structure is

Subj + + Verb +Obj

For example,

我会做饭。
Wǒ huì zuò fàn.
I know how to cook.

他会画画。
Tā huì huà huà.
I can draw.

我们会说中文。
Wǒmen huì shuō zhōngwén.
We can speak Chinese.

我妹妹会唱英文歌。
Wǒ mèimei huì chàng yīngwén gē.
My little sister knows how to sing English songs.

Negating 会 with 不

The word “不”is added in front of “会 “to negate the ability of knowing something. Note: due to the tone change rule that when followed by a 4th tone,bù changes to 2nd tone bú. Therefore,  不会 is pronounced as bú/

The sentence structure is

Subj + 不+会 + Verb +Obj

For example,

他不会说英文。
Tā bú huì shuō yīngwén.
He does not know how to speak English.

妈妈不会游泳。
Māmā bú huì yóuyǒng.
Mom does not know how to swim.

奶奶不会开车。
Nǎinai bú huì kāichē.
Grandma does not know how to drive.

EXPRESS AN ACTION HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE WITH

The sentence structure is

Subj + + Verb +Obj

他今年年底会回中国。
Tā jīnnián niándǐ huì huí zhōngguó.
He will go back to China at the end of this year.

我很快会回来。
Wǒ hěn kuài huì huílái.
I will come back soon.

明天会下雨吗?
Míngtiān huì xià yǔ ma?
Will it rain tomorrow?

Negating with

The sentence structure is

Subj + 不+会 + Verb +Obj

爸爸晚上去北京,不会回家。
Bàba wǎnshàng qù běijīng, bú huì huí jiā.
Dad goes to Beijing this evening, he won’t come back home.

明天不会下雨。
Míngtiān bú huì xià yǔ.
It won’t rain tomorrow.

星期天他要学习,不会去看电影。
Xīngqítiān tā yào xuéxí, bú huì qù kàn diànyǐng.
He has to study this Sunday. He won’t go to cinema.
