12 Chinese Proverbs on Friendship

Abraham Lincoln says, “The better part of one’s life consists of his friendship.” Friends are so important to all of us. They bring support, love and excitement to our lives. Friendship is therefore an essential part a child needs to learn. As teachers and parents, what can we teach our kids the wisdom from our ancestors? How do Chinese people view friendship? There are 12 Chinese proverbs on friendship I would like to share with you and your child.

First of all, let’s study some vocabulary:

朋友 péng yǒu friend
友谊 yǒuyì friendship

Chinese Proverbs on Friendship

1. 患难见真情。
huàn nàn jiàn zhēn qíng
A friend in need is a friend indeed.

2. 得朋友难，失朋友易
dé péng yǒu nán, shī péng yǒu yì
A friend is easier lost than found.

3.需要之时方知友
xǖ yào zhī shí fāng zhī yǒu
A friend is never known till a man has need.

4. 没有十全十美的朋友
méi yǒu shí quán shí měi de péng yǒu
A friend without faults will never be found.

5. 君子之交淡如水。
jūn zǐ zhī jiāo dàn rú shuǐ
A hedge between keeps friendship green

6.什么人交什么朋友。
shěn mé rén jiāo shén mé péng yǒu
A man is known by his friends.

7.东西是新的好，朋友是老的亲
dōng xī shì xīn de hǎo, péng yǒu shì lǎo de qīn
Everything is good when new， but friends when old.

8. 朋友之间也会保持距离。
péng yǒu zhī jiān yě huì báo chí jù lí
Friends agree best at distance

9. 再好的朋友也有分手的时候。
zài hǎo de péng yǒu yě yǒu fēn shǒu de shí hòu
Friends must part.

10. 背后说好话，才是真朋友
beì hòu shuō hǎo huà, cái shì zhēn péng yǒu
He is a good friend that speaks well of us behind our backs

11. 没有朋友，虽生犹死
méi yǒu péng yǒu, suī shēng yóu sǐ
Life without a friend is death.

12. 海内存知己，天涯若比另邻
hǎi nèi cún zhī jǐ , tiān yá ruò bǐ lín
A bosom friend afar brings distant land near.
