At some point, a child who reads one sentence at a time starts to want more. What happens next? Why did the dog run? Level B gives them that. Each book tells a small story across several sentences, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. The language is still simple and friendly, and the pictures still help. But now your child reads a bit further, and finishes a book feeling like a real reader.
Who Is Level B For?
Level B suits children who can read short, simple sentences and are ready for a little more. It’s often used with children around 6 to 10, but choose by what your child can do, not by age. Our guide to the 5 phases of Chinese literacy development can help you see where they are.
It’s a good fit if:
- your child has finished Level A, or reads short sentences with confidence;
- your child likes stories and asks “What happens next?”;
- you’d like steady practice that builds stamina for longer texts.
What’s Inside Level B
- 36 printable books in one download.
- Two versions of every book: Chinese only, and Chinese with pinyin. Use pinyin for support, then try Chinese only once a story feels familiar.
- A pronunciation video for each book, so you and your child can hear every sentence, even if your own Chinese is limited.
- A reading log sheet to record the books your child has read.
- Instant download. Print the pages, assemble them, and you have your own books.
What a Level B Book Looks Like
Each line has two to seven words, and each book has roughly 30 to 55 words in all. Pages carry more than one sentence, but the text always appears in the same spot, so a young reader never has to hunt for where to start. That small consistency makes longer text feel much less scary.
- Several sentences per page. Real mini-stories, not just patterns.
- Consistent text placement. Easy for little eyes to follow.
- Familiar vocabulary, used again. Words from earlier levels come back, with a few new ones to stretch your child.
- Pictures that support the story. Illustrations give clues without giving everything away.
- Everyday topics. Home, school, animals, food, and the seasons.
How to Use These Books
- Print and assemble. Start with a few books. You don’t need all 36 at once.
- Preview the pictures. Ask your child what they think the story is about.
- Read together first. Read the first time aloud, or watch the pronunciation video, then let your child read a page or two.
- Talk about the story. Ask one or two light questions, like “Which part did you like?” Skip the quiz.
- Reread and log. A second reading is usually smoother and more fun. Fill in the reading log together.

What Comes After Level B?
When your child reads these stories smoothly and wants more, Level C is the next step. It’s still beginner level, with slightly longer sentences, more varied structure, and a mix of stories and nonfiction, ten pages each. You can compare all four levels and try a free sample on our Chinese reading books for kids page.
Want the whole library? The Chinese Reading Made Easy Book Vault gives you a year of access to the books at all four levels, with more added regularly.
